New Amazon 4K Fire TV stick coming soon… now with better HDR support

In November Amazon will launch an updated version of the 4K Fire TV and it will no longer be available in a small, low profile box but in the same ‘stick’ format as the standard Amazon Fire TV. Quite incredible that they can fit a 4K streaming device intosuch a small form factor.

It’s quad core, features voice search and gives you access to all of Amazon Prime’s TV  and movie content, as well as the best web apps – iPlayer, Apple TV, Plex, Netflix etc and now works with more 4K TVs than ever before. Simply plug it in and away you go.

Improved support for 4K HDR

In an earlier version of this post I was too quick to slate this latest version as still only offering support for HDR and HDR+. Having read through the tech specs in more detail it does appear to now support HDR, HDR10, Dolby Vision, HLG and HDR10+. Which is impressive; not only should it be pretty future proof but this also implies that it will be the first streaming device from the big three (Apple/Amazon/Google) to support 4K HDR broadcasts on BBC’s iPlayer! (More info about HDR formats and why the BBC chose HLG here).
