Spending for future growth?

Last modified on:

Firstly this is a political post (albeit politically-agnostic), but also a bit of a rant:
There’s a major problem with the table shown below: it shows evidence of short term thinking. Really short term thinking. You can see in the table that the UK is now spending more on nearly everything except education:

I can’t help but feel that with better education we would help bring the cost of healthcare down by making better lifestyle choices. Smarter, educated people could create a high skilled labour force who can then command a higher salary, not rely on minimum wage.

The need goes further – house prices and the cost of living dictate both parents having to work. Kids are either insufficiently nurtured and cared for, or are put into nurseries with a pressure to keep prices as low as possible. We aren’t giving out kids the best start at life, or providing them with enough attention and a stable environment for them to grow, develop and learn in order to reach their potential (and therefore achieve the full potential of our society).

Perhaps we could even challenge our MPs to prevent us war-mongering in so many other parts of the world, (not just the bombing, but with regimes who we armed and traded for years) which brings us nothing but trouble back to our shores. It surely has our best chance of lowering the cost of defence and policing.

The irony is that at the same time there would be more money available to spend on all of the above. We’re in a downwards, shitty spiral that we can only get out of by investing in education, childcare and families.

I still haven’t a clue who to vote for though.

(Ok, I do know, but I’m not putting it here.)
